The core curriculum is meticulously crafted to equip DBA candidates with comprehensive exposure to economics and management. Competency workshops comprise a series of one-day or half-day discussions designed to train DBA students in research, teaching, presentation, and practice-oriented skills. Students will attend these workshops at PHBS and SMU, completing a total of 1 credit unit.

能力提升研讨会包括一系列为期一天或半天的讨论,旨在培养DBA学员在研究、教学、演讲和实践技能方面的能力。学员将在汇丰商学院和新加坡管理大学参加这些研讨会,共计完成1个学分。

In the second year, students will dedicate approximately 12 weeks to an introductory research project, which provides them with the opportunity to design a research study and write a short paper (1 credit unit). 

Students are allowed to extend their IRP to the first semester of the third year, for them to have sufficient time to identify their dissertation supervisors. The dissertation supervisors will be responsible for advising on the project and evaluating its quality.

Core Courses 核心课程

​The research method is designed for students focusing on the development of rigorous research skills essential for dissertation defence. It is the science of collecting and analysing data to convert information into useful knowledge. It provides students with tools for conducting research both qualitative and quantitatively, applicable to their dissertation, though not limited to the methods taught. Students will engage in practical exercises using statistical software, interpret complex data sets, and apply quantitative techniques to real-world business problems. Emphasis is placed on designing and conducting high-quality research, critical evaluation of existing literature, and effective communication of findings. The course will be taught by faculty form diverse research areas, covers topics including research question formulation, hypothesis development, data collection, data analysis and result interpretation.  By the end of the course, students will be equipped with necessary tools to produce and defend a robust, data-driven dissertation that contributes to the field of business administration.​

This course delves into sophisticated, modern theories of macroeconomic fluctuations and their applications in contemporary business contexts. Topics include economic growth, monetary and fiscal policy, business cycles, and global economic dynamics. Students will critically analyse macroeconomic models, interpret economic data, explore the implications of macroeconomic policies on business strategies and equipped students to make high-level business decision-making.

In recent years, major companies such as Amazon, Google, Meta (Facebook), Uber, Airbnb, and Microsoft have built in-house economics teams to harness analytical tools from economics in areas such as strategic decision-making, product development, pricing, platform governance, and policy analysis. This trend reflects a growing recognition that advanced microeconomic thinking—especially insights from game theory and behavioral economics—can provide valuable guidance in navigating complex and dynamic business landscapes.

This course is designed to provide DBA students with a solid foundation in microeconomic theory and its applications to real-world business challenges. We will examine how firms engage strategically with competitors, customers, regulators, and internal stakeholders, and how formal economic models can help clarify and evaluate these interactions. Core topics include asymmetric information, incentive mechanisms, strategic pricing, market and platform design, competition and cooperation, and bounded rationality.

Global Economy and Trade Organizational
This course provides an in-depth discussion of the role and strategy of firms in the era of globalization and de-globalization at the graduate level. The topics include the role of firms in early globalization, global value chains, multinational firms, trade and investment policy, policy uncertainty, and the robustness of supply chains. The module will briefly cover the workhorse theoretical models on firms in global value chains and then extensively discuss the recent empirical evidence, geo-political events, and case studies. The course aims to introduce students to the core insights about the role of firms in globalization that economists have generated over the past several decades. These insights are relevant for developing a critical understanding of the wide range of issues and debates in the global economy today, especially as geo-political tensions have put many firms from developing economies under increasing public and political scrutiny.

This course aimed to delve into complex theories and applications of organizational behaviour, focusing on leadership, motivation, team dynamics, and change management within global contexts. Students will go through advanced topics such as cultural intelligence, strategic decision-making, and organizational culture transformation. It emphasizes practical strategies for enhancing organizational performance, managing cross-cultural teams, and driving innovation. By integrating cutting-edge research and real-world case studies, students will develop sophisticated insights and skills to navigate and influence organizational behaviour at the highest level.

This course is designed to systematically equip students with the essential knowledge, theories, principles and methodologies to develop a strategic mindset and enhance their abilities to analyze and address corporate strategic issues. It emphasizes a high-level strategic perspective for thinking and diagnosing enterprise challenges, integrating a comprehensive analysis of both the internal and external environments to formulate and implement effective short-term and long-term strategies. Additionally, the course provides tools and techniques for innovative strategy development, explores personal creativity, and examines the impact of management practices on creativity and the innovation process within an organization, recognizing the importance of aligning resources, values, and strategies with the environment for successful strategy execution.

This course provides an overview of the major theories and principles that have shaped the field of management. It examines the historical evolution of management thought, from classical and behavioral approaches to modern systems and contingency theories. Emphasis is placed on understanding how these theories inform the core functions of management—planning, organizing, leading, and controlling—in both traditional and contemporary organizational contexts. Students will critically evaluate the application of management theory in real-world scenarios and develop a foundational framework for analyzing managerial practices.

This course is designed to enhance the students’ understanding of major global financial issues and challenges that have important impact on the economy and the businesses. DBA students holding senior management positions in their companies could benefit from a deeper understanding of how financially integrated the global economy is, and how global financial flows and developments affect the economy and the operating environment of their businesses. The insight in global financial issues will also be useful as the students try to adjust their business strategies to the rapidly shifting centres of gravity in the global economy. Topics covered include monetary policy, interest rate and exchange rate, central banking, capital flows, banking sector risks and financial crisis etc.

Dissertation Guidelines 论文须知

The Dissertation Committee consists of:  

  1. A minimum of three members. 
  2. At least one current SMU full-time faculty member on the tenure track. 
  3. At least one faculty member who is from the degree awarding School.  
  4. One external member (external to School, who may or may not be a SMU faculty).  
  5. Three members must have an earned doctorate qualification. 
  6. Chair of the doctorate dissertation committee should be a SMU full-time faculty member or a SMU-affiliated Doctoral Dissertation Committee faculty. 
  7. The doctorate dissertation committee could include one or more faculty members from the partner university, who will be appointed as Co-Chair. 

博士论文委员会(Dissertation Committee)需符合以下组成要求:

  1. 至少由三名成员组成;
  2. 至少包含一名新加坡管理大学(SMU)在职、具有终身教职资格的全职教师;
  3. 至少一名成员来自授予学位的学院;
  4. 至少一名成员为学院以外的外部成员(可为其他学院教师或非SMU人员);
  5. 三位成员必须拥有博士学位;
  6. 博士论文委员会主席应为SMU全职教师,或隶属于SMU博士论文委员会的教员;
  7. 委员会可包含一位或多位合作大学的教师成员,并可被任命为共同主席(Co-Chair)。

Although preliminary dissertation work may begin at any time during the programme, the student can only proceed formally with the dissertation after having satisfied the following: 

  1. Successful completion of the Coursework, Competency Workshops, and Introductory Research Project 
  2. Successful completion of the Qualifying Examination  
  3. Successful appointment of the Dissertation Committee 

Students can work on their dissertation project off-campus but are required to meet at least 6 times per year with their Dissertation Supervisor and Committee members. Students are expected to complete their dissertation and submit it to the Dissertation Committee in the fourth year (by the end of Term 2). 

The Dissertation Committee will review the dissertation and conduct a final examination in which the student will orally defend his/her dissertation. 

If no further revisions to the dissertation are needed, the supervisor indicates committee's recommendation on the outcome of Final Defence. Subsequently, the Programme/Academic Director will approve the committee's recommendation for the Final Defence and graduation filing, confirming the fulfilment of the dissertation requirements for the DBA degree. 


学生正式开始博士论文工作前,必须满足以下条件:

  1. 成功完成课程学习、能力工作坊(Competency Workshops)及入门研究项目;
  2. 成功通过资格考试(Qualifying Examination);
  3. 博士论文委员会正式组建并获批准。

学生可以在校外进行论文研究,但每年必须至少与论文导师及委员会成员会面6次。学生应于第四学年(第二学期结束前)完成论文并提交给论文委员会审阅。

论文委员会将审阅学生提交的论文,并组织最终答辩,学生将在答辩中进行口头答辩。

如果论文无需进一步修改,导师将向委员会提交最终答辩结果的推荐意见。随后,项目主任/学术主任将批准委员会的答辩结果建议,并进行毕业申请,确认学生已完成博士学位的论文要求。

Other Non-Credit Graduation Requirements 其他非学分毕业要求

Upon completing the coursework segment (14 credit units), students will take the Qualifying Examination (QE), which assesses their ability to apply the concepts learnt to practical scenarios. The students who fail the QE can apply for a second choice within three months. If they fail again, their study shall be terminated. In terms of timeline, QE is usually after 2 years. Dissertation supervisors are usually assigned after 1.5 years. So students will complete IRP under the guidance of supervisors and then take QE.)

Students complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Programme offered by SMU.
