| VARIATION AND ALGORITHMS IN CLINICAL DECISION-MAKING: EVIDENCE FROM URGENT CARE |
| ABSTRACT I present evidence from projects that quantify variation in physician clinical decisions and assess the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential complement to physicians. In telemedicine and urgent care settings, these studies document both unwarranted variation in physician decisions and cases where AI recommendations match or exceed physician performance. I also discuss preliminary evidence on the bounds of AI’s labor market impact. Together, these findings highlight the limits of human consistency and the potential for AI to augment, rather than replace, physician work. |
