SMU SOE Seminar Series (March 5, 2026): Designing a DBA Dissertation: Time Architecture, Research Framing, and Supervisor Governance

ABSTRACT

This seminar is based on Chapters 12 to 18 of Dr He's book Becoming a DBA and focuses on the first three foundational design steps in constructing a DBA dissertation: defining research goals and designing a time architecture; delineating the research field and framing the research question; and selecting the theoretical discipline while structuring the supervisor collaboration process.

The session approaches the DBA dissertation not merely as a writing task, but as a long-term project that can be deliberately designed and managed. It emphasizes the systematic construction of three interconnected structures: time architecture, research architecture, and relationship architecture.

Rather, it is built upon a structured framework developed through years of DBA teaching and supervision, together with the intellectual architecture presented in my book.
