INEQUALITY, ECONOMIC GROWTH, AND INTERGENERATIONAL MOBILITY ALL AROUND THE WORLD
ABSTRACT
The theoretical literature on intergenerational mobility offers numerous mechanisms that could explain the Great Gatsby Curve (GGC), describing a negative relationship between mobility and inequality, but fewer mechanisms that could explain a positive relationship between intergenerational mobility (IGM) and national income. That invites the following empirical questions, which we will explore in this paper: (1) How do countries grow IGM alongside national income? and (2) Can countries successfully increase IGM without increasing public spending?
