Last month, a review of secondary school education recommended that schools strengthen student-teacher bonds in the next few years. YouthInk writers discuss how they want their teachers to get to know them better. Ernest Tan, a first-year economic undergraduate at the Singapore Management University, recalled that his secondary school teacher encouraged him to take free piano lessons from her own piano teacher after finding out he was interested in picking up piano playing again. He cites two other similar examples, commenting that “The student-teacher relationship should not end when the bell rings or upon a student's graduation. The ideal relationship can be summed up in one sentence – a teacher in class, a friend outside of class.”
