In his weekly commentary, SMU Adjunct Faculty Larry Haverkamp discussed the stock market fluctuations in the US. He noted that in light of the announcement that there were less new jobs created compared to initial expectations, the US Central Bank will have to keep interest rates low for the moment. Adjunct Faculty Haverkamp also commented on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which could open a huge market for duty-free imports from the US. He stated that although the TPP might not help Singapore much as there already was a free trade agreement between the countries, it could benefit countries like Japan with lower import taxes and quotas on its cars.
