Professor Hoon Hian Teck, Associate Dean of SMU School of Economics, offered his thoughts on Singapore's population trend and the importance of having a “critical mass” in our population size. He examined, in particular, how the declining fertility rate would impact our economy in terms of tax base, talent pool and the generation of new ideas. He also addressed the question of whether Singapore could be reduced to a second- or third-tier city/state if we do not maintain the aforementioned critical mass.
