In his weekly commentary, SMU Adjunct Faculty Dr Larry Haverkamp shared his thoughts on Britain's vote to leave the European Union (EU) and the impact on the UK and the rest of the world. He noted that the biggest reason for leaving had been for Britain to regain its sovereignty and control its immigration. Dr Haverkamp added that the biggest problems coming are the penalties for withdrawal. He explained that the EU’s most powerful nation, Germany, has made sure it would be painful for Britain to leave and said that there would be no chance for Britain to continue to receive favourable treatment from its old friends in the EU. Dr Haverkamp also wrote about how Europe has done a terrific job of unifying a highly diverse group of countries, in which he discussed the three levels of integration.
