“There are no words to express my gratitude” was the first thing Ivan Wijaya, a leukaemia patient, said when he met his bone marrow donor, SMU graduate Enning Yow, for the first time at the Bone Marrow Programme (BMDP) offices at Novena Specialist Centre. Enning said that she had registered as a donor during a donation drive at SMU in 2006, but did not really think she would be donating as the chances of a patient finding a perfect match are one in 20,000. She received a call in August last year informing her that she had been identified as a suitable donor, and agreed to undergo the procedure when she was assured it did not have high risks. Enning said that she did not consider herself a hero, but was happy she was able to help.
