On what the new re-employment age should be, SMU Professor of Economics Hoon Hian Teck expects firms to balk at the idea of doing away with an age ceiling completely as they may think workers will want to "stay on forever". However, he pointed out that that is not true, and that “workers will naturally exit the labour force” as they “want time for themselves and families”. Prof Hoon also noted that the problem of employing too many highly paid but unproductive older workers comes about because many firms practise the “deferred wage compensation model”. Instead, he recommended paying “according to performance”.
